Affiliated Societies
The primary purpose of the Affiliated Societies is to ensure that Dartmoor Ponies bred outside the UK continue to meet the standards set by the Dartmoor Pony Society. This is achieved through cooperation and communication between the Dartmoor Pony Society and each Affiliated Society.
International Affiliated Societies
The Dartmoor Pony Society, based in the United Kingdom, is recognised as the Society of Origin for the registered Dartmoor breed. As the Dartmoor Pony originated on Dartmoor in Devon, in the South West of England, all official breed standards and registrations stem from this foundation.
The unique qualities of the Dartmoor Pony have attracted enthusiasts around the world, leading to the export of ponies to many countries. In several of these countries, dedicated groups of owners and breeders have formed local organisations which, as numbers have grown, have gone on to establish their own stud books. In some countries, ponies are also required to be registered through government or state agencies.
The primary purpose of the Affiliated Societies is to ensure that Dartmoor Ponies bred outside the UK continue to meet the standards set by the Dartmoor Pony Society. This is achieved through cooperation and communication between the Dartmoor Pony Society and each Affiliated Society.
Because of the time span between the earliest exports and the later formation of Affiliated Societies—and the inclusion of the breed within national regulatory systems—it is essential that all Dartmoor Ponies, whether traded domestically or exported further, remain fully traceable. Every pony must comply with the current requirements of the Dartmoor Pony Society, as well as any historical criteria that applied at the time the bloodline left the UK. Maintaining this continuity safeguards the integrity and future of the Dartmoor Pony breed worldwide.
